I have recently lost my and have received my p45.
Section 9 works number/payroll number and department of branch (if any).
It has given my payroll number and department but it also says (default). Could any one advise me what the default is .

I don't know, but if your employer either didn't have many separate departments, or you were in the same department as most people, then it just sounds like a lazy setting up of the payroll software, which probably said 'default' by default, and that's not been changed when a new department name has been added.

Having said that, I don't think anyone will care what your payroll no. and department were in that job. I imagine that with a very large employer, they'd be helpful bits of information if anyone ever had a query over your salary, but I can't imagine HMRC will care ... nor any future employer.
