Sunny Payday Loans - Proving a Debt
I took out a Sunny (who no longer exist) payday loan in October 2014 when times were hard. At the end of that year I am certain that I paid the loan off when I came into a sum of money. Since that time I had moved home address several times. Jump forward to January 2021, I have received an email from Lantern Debt Recovery Services informing me that I owe an amount of £248.50. I rang Lantern to inform them that I was under the impression I had paid the amount back in 2014 but due to the time elapsed I do not have any proof of that. Whilst I have moved several times Lantern already had my email address and telephone number but I have never, in the intervening 6 years, had any communication about this alleged 'debt' and there is no mention of the default on my credit report. I have asked Lantern for evidence of this outstanding sum but they have not provided anything. Can anyone advise about my next steps? It seems unfair that I may have to find 6 year old evidence which I no longer have. Thanks in advance.

It's in their court to prove the debt.1

If you think it may be statute barred, then send them the SB letter.
Stay off the phone, writing only from now on.
Lantern, or should I say Motor mile Finance (in a previous life), are a specialist debt purchasing company, payday loans are one of their favourites buys.
If you have not made a payment or acknowledged this debt in writing since 2014, then it will be statute barred by now.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the Debt free wannabe, Credit file and ratings, and Bankruptcy and living with it boards.
