Voluntary work - working from home tax relief

I have been doing voluntary work for a charity for a few years and because of the pandemic some of the work is being done from my home.
I pay tax on income from other sources and fill in a yearly self assessment form.
Would I be able to claim working from home tax relief based on the voluntary work I am doing?

No, because such expenses can only be set against the income arising from the job, which in your case is nil.

Do you not do any work from home for the "other sources"?
  • Thanks for responses. I did wonder if the relief had to be tied to paid employment but thanks for replying.
'Other Sources' is mainly pensions but I also rent a property I own which involves some 'work' on my part.

The micro service for WFH relief applies to employment where, for at least a day in the tax year, the employee is obliged by the employer to work from home. Those who complete a tax return cannot use the micro service, but can claim on the tax return. You can't be obliged to work from home if you aren't obliged to work at all, and you can't set employment expenses against anything other than employment income, which you don't have.

You can claim expenses incurred in your property business, but it is doubtful that the additional costs arising from doing a few bits of admin every so often at your desk at home would amount to anything worth claiming.
