Polly's new life!

I don't have much in the way of debt, a few items on 0% credit cards which I bought for the house.

But I seem to constantly be worrying about money and paying for things.  I'm doing okay at the moment and overpay the mortgage as much as I can as my fear is that I will be out of a job and once that happens, I have no clue what I will do.

I did some sums the other day and even after my mortgage is gone (planning on this being by the time I'm 50, (2031) but that is with pretty hardcore overpaying), I still need more than minimum wage to pay everything.  I think I'm in the zone of not enjoying my life as I spend all my time thinking about paying off the mortgage in case I lose my job.

I have an okay job, but I work for a sole proprietor whose business isn't doing great and he's 66, so ....

My youngest is off to secondary in September and I have it in my head that this is when I could change things.  Not leaving my job, but maybe getting another one as my children are getting more independent.  I work from home, but there isn't as much to do as there used to be, so I was thinking of speaking to my boss about only working mornings and maybe going to work in a supermarket or something just for when the inevitable does happen, I will have some kind of income.

I am a legal secretary, but not sure if I want to continue in that field as we are becoming more obsolete as the years are going on and after working from home for almost two years, I kind of want a change where I can get a bit of interaction with other people.  Am I even allowed to get a second job or will this mess with my tax?

So I guess this will be where I put down my idea for what to do and where to go from hereon.

So I've looked at the debt that I do have and they are:-

    Daughter 1 bed: £214.43
    Daughter 2 floor: £175.00
    Blinds for house: £228.00

Also will be buying a bed for Daughter 2 in the region of about £300.

These are all on 0% credit cards and I pay them with a system that I believe would be similar to "tilly tallying" or something that I think I have seen on here.  It's going down slowly and even if I haven't paid them off by the time the 0% runs out, there is other money in my account that would stop me going overdrawn.  I save £10 a month for my nephew and that is sitting in my account ready to give him when he's 18 (he's only 5 so far!).

Done my pension projections this morning.  If I continue as I am, I should have an okay income, but I don't get to retire till 2049 which is a bit scary like.

Have done my income and outgoing spreadsheets up to June which all look okay.

Still thinking about a second job, but not sure how to broach this with my current boss.  Not sure if it would be rocking the boat and making him think I either want to jump ship or would mean that he could pay me less per hour if I have another income from somewhere.

    Good luck.
could you possibly get evening or weekend work to dip your toe in the water? See if you like it before mentioning it to your employer.

I'm not sure how it all works to be honest.  I thought that if you found a job at a supermarket for example, that you had to available for whatever shift comes your way.  But I could look into it, thank you.

I'm at the stage of leaving my kids for a few hours by themselves, so something to think about.  When I worked in an office and not from home, I wouldn't have entertained this as any time out of the office was time to spend with my kids, but I see a lot more of them now I don't venture into London.

I like the idea of something with animals, but should imagine this would be volunteer work, which I'm not against, but it won't help with the money situation.
