I really like the idea of following a sport in the language you're learning! For those not into sport, perhaps find websites about something you're interested in. I think one of the things that didn't work for me about school learning was they tried too hard to be 'relevant' to teens so there was plenty about Marie France and Claudette going into record shops which I just didn't do.

Conversation here has set me wondering about what my goal is, and in a general way I suppose it's to be able to understand French spoken at normal conversational speed. I can't always expect them the speak slowly and clearly for me, much as I  might need it. ('Plus lentement, s'il vous plait!')

I just downloaded Duolingo after seeing this thread. I did a Japanese course in 2018 but I didn't do my homework and didn't learn much! I was doing a masters while working full time so not sure my timing was great... I'm not going to be super focused on learning but I'll go on the app when I have a spare moment.
Are you doing Japanese again, @Friday1989? Is it for work or leisure?

Probably a full time job and a Masters isn't the easiest combination. :) Hope it goes better this time, I'm sure you will have remembered some.

I was at school a very long time ago and even then the French text books would try to be very modern and "with it".  They came across as like your dad trying to disco dance to music you like!  It was a big turn off.  It might have been fun for the authors to write, but I think a more serious approach would have been better received by the pupils.

Thanks for this thread, I was aimlessly scrolling last night and came across it. I wasn’t even aware duolingo existed. I’ve always wanted to relearn french as I did you to GCSE level but didn’t know this platform existed. On with french now and just mastered mange, manges and mangez!!

I've recently discovered Maitresse Adeline on insta and other platform too I think.  Great little tutos about grammar and spelling.  It's certainly reminded me of some the rules I ignore when I write.  Having lived in France for 26 years speaking is no problem but writing requires a lot more effort.  Still trying to find Breton lessons online.

Oh my goodness - I've just looked her up and she goes far too fast for me! And it says she's primary level! Great practice for listening to spoken French, though.

How’s everyone doing with their language learning? I’m learning Scottish Gaelic, with a zoom evening class once a week and Duolingo when I remember (very irregularly). I’ve been learning well over a year and am very much beginner level still so I’d like to get better at learning more consistently. My 6yo, who started Gaelic immersion school in August (only spoke a few words of it before that), is now coming home and teaching me new words almost daily and correcting my pronunciation 🤣 I thought it would take longer for him to overtake me, but they don’t use any English in the classroom at this stage so I guess it’s a lot of exposure for him compared to what I’m getting.

My aim is that by next year when they stop providing English translations of the homework instructions I am prepared for that 🤣

That sounds like quite a challenge! I am struggling with Brazilian Portuguese because eventually I will lose the translator who helps us keep in touch with someone in Brazil - but there are a few years to go.

I've heard people say that about six weeks of immersion in a language marks a turning point so perhaps your child has an unfair advantage. :)

Mind you, there's always online translation. :D

I don't know if there's anyone else here learning Scottish Gaelic?
