Anywhere west of Llanelli and spoken Welsh seems far more common. Lots of first language speakers. My employer offers free lessons and a good number of my  colleague have taken up the offer.

Lovely to see Welsh being spoken! I don't speak it myself but it brings back memories of holidays near Machynlleth when I was a child.

I wonder what response you'd get if you started a thread entitled 'Boro da'?

Thanks for the replies everyone, very exciting! We actually stayed very close to St David's as I was hopeful that I'd find at least one person to enjoy/endure my Welsh, but to no avail.... I'm learning the South dialect with dysgu Cymraeg 😁

    Hi
I've been doing Latin since Christmas as I was doing different word games online (not Wordle) an getting pee'd off with the gormless adverts .  Really enjoying it and my GCSE Latin (vintage 1988/9) is slowly trickling back. I generally only do one lesson a day, so my score isn't brilliant, but it helps me get my brain back online first thing in a morning...

South Pembrokeshire is very ‘English and perhaps this spills over into St David’s as it is not far away. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Landsker_Line This is the ‘line’ which defines ‘little England’. Good luck with your Welsh.

I tried the Duolingo Latin and gave it up as a bad job: the course was either not as good as their French one or I missed things I needed to know. could be the latter as I do have a tendency not to pay close attention. I seem to remember the Open University has a Latin course which looked interesting... I did two years of Latin at school and it sounds beautiful to me, but I needed to focus on one language at a time. (Not nearly at that stage that people apparently reach where they study their third language through the medium of their second language!)

Duolingo users, has anyone else had a change in format a few weeks ago? How are you finding any changes?

I'm doing French and it's now very linear and the speed tests are part of the home page. This disappoints me as I really struggle with these: mine are all blank! I'm also finding I'm redoing some stories from a while back - and I haven't found the pronunciation section at all.

A friend who's doing Welsh said hers hasn't altered.

PS I edited my settings so I'm no longer down as learning German, Portuguese, Finnish and Russian! It would have been nice, but I can't focus on more than one thing at once.

  • This is such a lovely thread :) It has encouraged me to *finally* give Duolingo a try and I'm now on day 7 of German.
