in Cutting tax
I started a new job in November and my 2 weeks pay for that month had tax code 1258L which was fine and same as code with previous employer
got payslip for December, tax code BR but tax taken equates to 50%?!
Salary 5004
holiday bonus 456
tax 2730
ni 432
i can’t work out what’s happened… I sent my p45 to new employer on 23rd Nov.

Payroll are out until 4th Jan so was hoping someone here might be able to help before I sit on hold to tax office for hours.
also my HMRC paye account is only showing my new employer now and total income as only Nov/Dec with no mention of my old employer
thanks in advance

What does your tax account show for the tax code for this employment ? It looks like BR is being used on a cumulative basis so taking all previous pay this FY into account but has been limited to taking 50% of this particular pay packet as that is all they are allowed to deduct. If your tax account is showing BR you need to contact HMRC to find out what is going on. Try phoning around 7.55 in the morning.

It is showing BR. I’ll try and find a number thank you. Now to keep my son amused while I’m on the phone 😩Last bet : 26th Oct 2006:j Debt free 25th Feb 2008:j Living "my" dream:T0

Looks like another case of HMRC receiving details of the new job and not receiving (or not taking into account) the fact that the first job has ceased. Therefore, HMRC Operate BR at what is perceived to be a second job! RTI (real time information) has been in operation for many years now. Why does it not operate, in real time?1

Quick update. Comments above were correct. They have a leave date but it takes an extra 10 days to kick in a no longer employed so they have me as having 2 jobs.
tax code corrected so should get what I’m owed back in Jan payment.
Thanks for everyone’s helpLast bet : 26th Oct 2006:j Debt free 25th Feb 2008:j Living "my" dream:T1 -
