So no-one's chasing you on debts 4&5, but debt 3 are writing. albeit to the wrong address?

I'd just make an offer (a small one) to settle debt 3.
  • Thanks @fatbelly, I've made a 30% offer to debt 3, and spoken to them on the phone so they'll write back to my actual address now to agree or decline. I'm just really worried I'll get a CCJ or something from the others and won't even know because they've written to an old address 😬
    Debt was £15,903 😬 Now £2718.14 £0 😲🥳

Off the normal way of doing things, but is it possible to pop round and talk to the people now at the old address and ask them very nicely if they would be kind enough that should any mail arrive there for you to forward it so that you can deal with it immediately and give the correct address? You could explain that you have been paying a couple of standing orders for a long time, but have no idea who they were to and stopped them, but that whoever it was may have the old address.  I would be happy to do that if someone asked politely, so it might work with them?

Unfortunately I'm about 200 miles away now, otherwise that would be a very good idea

  • If they're going to CCJ you, do they check your address on your credit record/electoral roll before they take it that far?

For the sake of a couple of first class stamps, pop a letter in the post asking the question - and giving your new address. You only have the cost of the stamp to lose, and it may help a little with peace of mind.

  • I found debt 4, it’s almost half the size I was expecting it to be (🥳) so I’ve changed my address with them and offered a 20% settlement. Last I heard of debt 5, it was with Arden, I’ve googled them and apparently they went out of business a few years ago. The debt was originally a loan with mbna, I’ve phoned them and they have no record of me, even in the archives. Do you think maybe that debt died with Arden?!

When a creditor goes bust, any assets on its loan book are usually sold to benefit their creditors.

Often these accounts are bought in bulk, and they can occasionally be sat on for quite some time.

For example if the name and/or address is incomplete, there are a number of reasons why debts are not always pursued, companies make commercial decisions on whether to chase debts or not, based on the likelihood of repayment by the debtor.
