PC Memory Query

Options
Looking at some reasonably priced memory for my desktop pc either new or secondhand.
I need 2 x 4gb DDR2 non ecc.
I keep coming across memory that says 'designed for AMD'.
I have an Intel processor.
Surely the memory will work with any processor ??
Or am I mistaken ??

Almost certainly all consumer/mainstream memory will be non-ECC, as you find that sort of stuff in servers.

The memory "designed for AMD" is more about enhanced timings/optimisations that work in conjunction with AMDs of that era, but beyond that for an Intel they'll just be ignored.  So its at best a marketing gimmick.

DDR2 is no longer mainstream ow that DDR4 (and DDR5) is a thing so any DDR2 memory you get will be second hand.

What was wrong with adding to the existing thread where you have been pointed at the two main places for memory CEX and ebay.

    https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/6322023/new-desktop-advice-please/p1

What PC have you got and motherboard?
What memory sticks are in already
    How many slots
    max speed of memory.

You can still get new  DDR2 I got some(should have gone to CEX like I have since.)
on your other thread you were getting very high i got 8GB new for £30 off Amazon(£27 now).a couple of years back
    https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B076LMX6N4
(my mother board was 2gb max in each slot and needed a bios update to work)

CEX will take it back if it does not work.
Getting matched sets might not be easy although people do report CEX send out matched if they have them

if you have 4 slots 2GB are £1 each

ebay should be be easier to get a set.

Work out what you need first that will depend what you have and the max you can take.

When you are searching for secondhand RAM is is often not made clear if it is non-ECC or ECC I am afraid.
There appear to be lots of instances in reviews where EEC has been sent out to customers instead of non-ECC.

The memory "designed for AMD" is more about enhanced timings/optimisations that work in conjunction with AMDs of that era, but beyond that for an Intel they'll just be ignored.  So its at best a marketing gimmick.
    Thanks for clarification.

Yes I know it is not mainstream but DDR2 is all that is all I can fit in my pc.
    Thanks for your reply.

I assume that your board only has two slots?
No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?

Would that work? £16 for 8 GB

I have started a new thread for clarity as certain responders to my other post were starting to get into a technical spat with each other.

I only have 2 slots with 2 x 2gb at the moment. The maximum I can have is 8gb total.

You can still get new  DDR2 I got some(should have gone to CEX like I have since.)

Yes I know you can get new.
But that's why I asked the question about AMD as all I could find at a new price on Amazon was listed as '
This DDR2 memory module is designed for AMD'.
Would have been silly to buy it not understanding if it would work or not.

CEX will take it back if it does not work.
Getting matched sets might not be easy although people do report CEX send out matched if they have them
I have searched CEX & even when I find some 4gb RAM they do not make it clear if it is non-ECC or ECC.
Again silly to buy it if it might be wrong.

if you have 4 slots 2GB are £1 each
    I don't, I have 2 slots maximum 4gb each
ebay should be be easier to get a set.
Plenty on ebay, but not from UK suppliers & I am not getting involved with ordering from China.

Work out what you need first that will depend what you have and the max you can take.

Thank you for taking the time to respond to my query.

You could just go with one 4gb along side the 2gb you have

What speed do you have in now.

Yes it would but it's from China.
Not keen on getting involved with buying stuff from there in case there are problems with sending the wrong stuff or it does not work.

how far is your local CEX with stock?

for some others systems I walked in and picked what I wanted from the box they had.
it was DDR3 so they had more.
