It's very easy to claim and from memory it doesn't specify the minimum amount of care required. I tried looking to make sure we didn't claim if not entitled with the level of care they provided us. My husband and I didn't need the NI credits as we both work and even on maternity leave I earned enough.

It was nice to be able to help my parents after all they do for us. Plus it was good to surprise my financially astute dad with something he didn't know about NI.
Don't listen to me, I'm no expert!

There is no minimum time specified but
you will receive a Class 3 NI credit for each week or part week you cared for the child
So looking after the child for 1 hour on 27th March does not entitle you to a whole year of credits as some will have claimed but as we know there is little chance of anyone actually checking.
  • It is easy to do and involves the parent signing over their NI credits from receiving child benefit.  No evidence is required and no specification on number of hours.  I have looked after my DGC one sometimes two days a week since the eldest was a baby (she is now 6) and since retirement I have claimed for two years NI contributions to help fill in my missing years as I retired 8 years early. The other GP claims on alternate years as she also has NI gaps and looks after the GC one day a week.
