Lots of advice on buying cars over on Honest John - there is a car buying guide on the rh side and in 'The Back Room' you can ask questions if you register. Although a search will probably give you some helpful pointers if there's not enough for you in the car buying guide!

Nope , have never bought a brand new car and probably never will......... to lose 30 - 40 % as soon as you drive out of the showroom , it just goes against my whole moneysaving (tight****) principles :D

I have bought brand new and second hand in the past.
The brand new car we bought was a serious bargain and included 0% finance over 3 years.

It took me over an hour of haggling with 3 different sales bods to get the price i wanted and we will keep it until it dies so well pleased with that purchase.

The main thing is to set a price you are prepared to pay and walk away if they dont meet it, stick to your guns on it, remember they want to sell and there are many dealers around who will be happy to take your money.

Newish car ? The best cost wise would be a car 1 to 2 yrs old with full service history and balance of warrenty.
Better still if you can get one at 0% finance.

There are a lot of trade places that sell cars of this sort,
    finance packages differ.

One of the biggest and most well known is down the road from me....lucky me :)

    Details here

google for other car trade sales companies, there are several big ones up and down the country.

Well you said newish so I take it you mean nearly new. I always buy from BCA Auctions, because they have a searchable online database with 11,000 cars being sold every 3 days or so.

If you buy one under three years old with all the right stamps in the book you will have a manufacturers gaurantee to rely on. Check their website for a branch nearest you. You won't however be able to search the database without paying rediculous money for the privilage, so if you are serious about this method I will be happy to help you keep an eye out for the right car when it comes available. Note though this method will require you to be ready with the money in your account and able to go to the auction with notification through me in as little time as 12-13 hours (I.e. next day) or some times you get about 3 days notice.

Not always the best option to go 0% finance. Particularly if you have saved up the money to buy the car

    EG:
Garage A sells car for £8995 at 0% Finance

Garage B sells same car for £7995

Generally dealers who offer 0% finance, inflate the OTR price to recoup their costs

Indeed this can be true but thats all about shopping around and knowing the "right price" to pay for the model you are looking for.

Once the market price is known then you do the 0% finance deal and stick the cash in a high interest account, at least that's what i do.....
