Nationwide customers unable to receive or send payments

Nationwide customers have been unable to transfer money in or out of their bank account since around 7am, leaving some without wages just days before Christmas. The bank says it is trying to resolve the problem, which means there is currently a delay on outbound and inbound faster payments...

  • I had been grumbling yesterday as I'd been paid a whole week too early, and now I'm very glad I was!

I do feel sorry for anyone impacted though, what an awful time of the year for this to happen!

I agree, however, having multiple current account will not help those whose money comes into the one account and that same account pays their direct debits the same day. (Hopefully, that's not too many)

I have multiple accounts, each with their own float, for access to cash if necessary, and am lucky to have credit cards with multiple providers to get me through any spend issues, however, I too would suffer if the systems of my main account were not receiving my income, and therefore unable to pay my direct debits on time.

All we can do, as customers, is try to spread the risk as much as possible but, ultimately, it will be down to the bank or building society to make good any financial issues that have arisen due to a fault with their systems, beyond customer control.

I notice Coventry Building Society appeared to be suffering similar issues with transactions, the following day. Unrelated I guess.

For many, who get paid on 25th of the month, or in this month 25-28, their incomes should be coming in early. Wouldn't have thought that would cause the systems to crash, however, the consequences of it not working are likely to be felt greater by those affected.

I have seen claims of people being unable to heat their house because of no access to cash, and people trolling them as false. Some of those claims may be false, however, for those on pre-payment meters it is likely to be fact and a big issue. No access to funds, no top-up! Not everyone os fortunate enough to have access to cash reserves in this current climate.

I hope it gets resolved to everyone's satisfaction.

And yes, Nationwide is one of my accounts. Has been for four years. Luckily, is one of those I just hold £100 in in case of need of cash (though not happened yet lol). I am NOT affected by this outage personally though, and will not be claiming to have been.

I totally understand. I live in supported living and staff here don't receive their monthly pay until the 24th Dec. One particular staff here can't afford to do her Christmas food shopping until she gets paid and because of shift hours won't be able to go to the supermarket until after 3pm when she finishes work. That time is going to be manic.

They're must be many people living pay cheque to pay cheque and Christmas must be a hard time for them. I was there myself some years back but I paid my debts and managed to save some money in my personal accounts which I don't like spending now. I'm able to go shopping really early in the morning to avoid the crowds.

A credit card with a modest limit is useful for these type of situations -  they are useful for travel tickets, petrol and for paying for food groceries.

That's all well and good for people that manage their cards well. If you're living from payday to payday it will only take a slight blip to mean you can't afford to repay it on time and then you enter a spiral.

I have 3 credit cards and always pay them off when the bill generates. I only spend what I can afford. I used to be rubbish with money. It's only now that I have savings and don't like dipping into them. I think about if I really need something before buying it.

My friend gets subprime cards like confetti so I know the danger but money management isn't the issue.
We're not talking about spending more here - just a short term buffer to get needed groceries or top-up a prepayment meter.

Two accounts is most of use if card payments on one account don't go through but then a credit card with a different provider also gets around that issue.

I transferred from a Nationwide current account to a Coventry savings account yesterday morning and it went through fine.
