Luck of the draw unless you get some recommendations from friends and family. However, my current broker is lovely and always keeping me up-to-date and in the loop. Have had the opposite experience before as well as one who kept trying some hard sell on insurance.

no problems with using Brokers paid and Free. I just avoid Estate agent ones

They are also useful beyond finding the best rates, they can also tell you which lender will be painfree and/or quicker, which is handy if your in a rush.

  • I was doing the mortgage app myself, all fine until very near the end when their final approval rejected us something we'd been been approved by the application staff.
At that point you look like a terrible buyer and everyone in the chain gets worried (looks like you're stalling)

A broker was suggested and this company knew the rules for all the major lenders and their current lead times. They also have dedicated contact centres who seem to do things much quicker.
The first application took 8 weeks or so, and the broker one took 2 weeks.

So my feeling is that if you need to complete quickly or have any unusual circumstance then a broker can really reduce the risk.

We used a mortgage broker as ftb. They were absolutely useful & made the entire process super smooth. Their services were free too. They arranged our mortgage and protection needs. Deffo worth Imo & Would use our broker firm again as they just held our hand and made it super easy.

I used to think the paid ones were better but used a free one and was also a good experience.

Recommendations are also good but I avoid estate agent ones
