Self Assessment Tax payments on account

in Cutting tax
Since 2017 I have filled in my SA on Gateway. Before that by post. I pay my bill in Jan and July like everyone else. I do not query the amount I presume it is all done by computers. But today, I paid more attention to the calculation summary before paying it and I notice that there is no deduction for payment on account. I tried to look at previous years but I could not find any other records apart from this year 2020/2021. Have I been overpaying all these years? Thanks

Your tax calculation is a calculation of your liability for that year alone.
You need to look at your statement of account a few days after submitting your return to see how that gets updated.
Could be you have a calculation showing say £5,000 is owed for 2020:21 but you have already made POA of say £4,000 towards it. But POA are never part of the calculation of what you owe for a particular tax year.
If you give some figures it should be possible to give you an example of how it will work for you.
Total owe for 2020:21 (per the CALCULATION) and how much you paid as POA in January and July 2021. Do not include any Balancing Payment for 2019:20 in the January figure.1 -
You made a payment on account in January 2021 and another one in July 2021 towards your 2020/21 tax liability. This is only calculated when you submit your return. Now you can work out what you still owe on this liability. As Dazed says, check your statement of account.Furthermore - your account will shortly update to show the actual amount due in January.0
