MSE Poll: How much is a £100 voucher at Amazon, M&S, Halfords and more really worth to you?

Poll started 14 December 2021
These days, many short-lived promotional deals are discounted via store-specific vouchers, not cash. So we wanted to test which you found the most valuable in general, which are most appealing. To do that, we want to value how much cash you'd buy the voucher for if you could.

Who are all these people who would willingly pay £100 of their own money to have a £100 voucher of their own at all these places? What's the point? A £100 voucher is a lot less flexible than £100 cash! If you have no better ideas for a gift for someone, then maybe, but just to exchange for yourself ("worth to you")?0

Wouldn't give anything for a voucher unless I already use that store0

A voucher’s fine if you actually want to buy from that retailer, and they don’t go bust before you can! Plus vouchers tend not to be valid for spend on already discounted items. And you are unlikely to get change, so you may have to buy additional items just to use up the voucher. But what annoys me the most, is when they are also harvesting your data when you use the voucher!Fashion on the Ration

We used to be able to buy vouchers through a salary scheme where I could get £100 worth for £90 deduction of my salary. I think there was salary sacrifice as well. In any case I only did it as it was a supermarket I would be using anyways so I just looked at it as a 10% off thing I needed to buy.
For your survey though - if I don't know the shop or would never use it I might very well still get vouchers but only if I could sell them for a profit.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on Debt Free Wannabe, Old Style Money Saving and Pensions boards. I used to get £100 Sainsbury's vouchers for £95 via one of the utility companies. Made total sense, since I was spending £400 per month there anyway. Every little £20 helped!#2 Saving for Christmas 2024 - £1 a day challenge. £325 of £3660

The poll didn’t make any sense to me whatsoever. The question was, “How much is a £100 voucher at Amazon, M&S, Halfords and more really worth to you?” then followed by “How much would you pay for a £100 voucher at the following stores?” It then gave options anywhere between £6 and £100.
There is no logic to this at all, and I really don’t get what the person who set these questions is asking. As regards the first question, well if you were given a voucher for £100 at any of the named retailers it would obviously be worth £100 if you bought goods from them up to that amount.
As regards the second question, who has ever tried going into a retailer and tried to buy a £100 voucher from them for £6, £30, £80 or indeed even £99? They’d just look at you and say, “Sorry, but to buy this £100 voucher you need to pay us £100?”
Could anyone tell me what the question setter was on? Because I’d like to try some.0 -
