Hi
My wife is working as an administrator with a company who deal with police . She deals with dealing with their students and does not have access to any confidential information. She is required yo fill a nppv level 1 forms to be vetted. She has never been in any trouble   but I (her husband) received a caution as spent caution in 2014. She has declared this in her corm , the caution I received was Spent and was for receiving gift vouchers from an external company. She is now earlier that she will not pass her nppv level 1 because of this. Dies anyone know if my caution of 7 years ago may have an adverse effect on her application.
Thanks in advance

Hi, since your wife isn't going to be a police officer and is only required to complete a very basic form, your old caution shouldn't affect her application. In fact, the information and sample application form contained in the police college library's document, link below -

    https://library.college.police.uk/docs/college-of-policing/Vetting-APP-2021.pdf   -  (See pages 144 to 150).

doesn't seem to have any space for filling in details of any family members. It also seems to indicate that even if she had a caution herself in the past it wouldn't be detrimental.

It's when people are applying to be police officers that they have to disclose all information about family. My brother had to do so years ago when he applied to join. (Thank goodness we'd all been very good!)

All your wife can do is complete the form as honestly as possible. She's already working there - that's a good sign.

    That's an interesting crime.
  • Thanks for this. The form she filled asked for information about ne and we answered it honestly and explained what happened. As she is not actually in paying for police force I am hoping it be ok

Possibly not, but in all honesty, nobody here could possibly say yes or no to this.
    Correct.

Ultimately a company can use almost any criteria they like when deciding who to employ, apart from a very limited number of factors prohibited by law. Even if a particular factor does not exclude somebody, it does not stop the company from favouring another applicant who has less "baggage".

Whilst I think what you describe is unlikely to be a problem, as Jillanddy says, nobody can tell you for certain it won't be.

If receiving gift vouchers is a crime then they had better take me away as a multiple recidivist.

However...was your wife involved in your criminal activity in any way?
  • No she was not involved. They investigated me under bribery law but decided to give ne a caution

If it is raised then I would be very careful of the language you use.

A caution is something the police *may* offer and you chose to accept or not.  It's an admission of guilt in return for no further action.  When you say the police "gave" you a caution it sounds like you didn't understand the terms you were agreeing to or that you were acknowledging you were guilty of what they were accusing you of.

I used to run a major background check/vetting program.  I regularly saw people with convictions or cautions and how they presented it was a major part in deciding whether they would pass or not.

All the best with whatever happens,

  • Thanks. They did decide not to prosecute and I agreed to caution. However as my wife was not involved question is would this hinder her chances, she is an admin fir a company who deals eith their apprenticeship students and has not git access to any confidential information

It's unlikely to have an adverse effect. Just get her to be completely honest and get all the facts correct.
  • Agree with robatwork, I think it's unlikely to be a problem but the police can be a bit picky.  All she can do is be completely honest and transparent and let the clearance process run its course.
