Council Tax rebanding

in Cutting tax
On 24th November 2021 I received a letter from the Listing and Valuation Officer, saying that my house was being considered for upward re-banding due to extension done before we bought the place.
On 7th December I received a notice of increased Council Tax charges for the higher banding For the period 1st April 2021 to 31st March 2022.
I accept the re-banding but understand that increased charges apply from the date of re-banding and are not back dated.
I had no notification of the decision to re-band and would like to challenge the additional charge of £358.64.
Have I any chance of success?
Regards
Jim Wright

First of all it will depend on where you live, the date you bought the house and the date on the Notice of Alteration from the VOA and if the figure of £358.64 is an additional charge or in fact a revised calculation of how much is now outstanding on your 2021/22 CT account.fatherfish said:On 24th November 2021 I received a letter from the Listing and Valuation Officer, saying that my house was being considered for upward re-banding due to extension done before we bought the place.

If you live in Wales the increase can be backdated to the date you moved into the house, in England the increase will apply from the date of the Notice. If you do not appear to have received a Notice, you can check your CT band on line and see what the effective date is. If the band has been increased it may be that the notice has been delayed or lost in the post.
If you are in England the extra you should pay is (the number of days from the date of notice until 31 March 2022) divided by 365 and multiplied by the amount payable for the year for the new band minus the amount payable for the year for the old band.
So for example assuming 127 days until 31 March 2022 and. old band £1750 pa new band £2000 pa, then extra due for 2021/22 would be 127 divided by 365 multiplied by £2000 - £1750 = 0.348 x £250 = £87If you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales0
