I'd advise against accepting a loan from a friend, especially for that much.

When would you expect to be able to eventually pay them back?

Would it put a strain on your relationship if you couldn't?

If they are happy to GIFT you an amount of cash (even if much less), then that's a different call.

Money issues can sometimes be a way to lose a good friend.
To add, the loan would be included in the bankruptcy and you would not be allowed to pay the friend back.

I’ll second not borrowing from your friend. Let them know how grateful you are, but that right now, and in your circumstances, emotional support would be a far more valuable gift.

If you have to have the contact lenses, can you get any form of tax relief on that do you know? It’s a long shot, and would realistically only be a tiny amount, but every little helps!

Re contents insurance, as you live in social housing there are specialist affordable policies out there for social tenants. Do ask your HA.
I live in a council house and our household has such a policy.

Mine offers a policy too but it would cost me just under £10 pcm more for the level of cover I need. There's no harm in checking but don't assume it will be cheaper.

OP, make sure you have the level of cover you need. Remember, it's not just to cover expensive tech items in case of theft. A friend of mine years ago had a house fire and what wasn't burned was ruined by smoke or water damage. She had to replace literally everything, from her toothbrush and underwear to sunglasses and wooden spoons. Thankfully she wasn't in the house at the time and had adequate cover but she had only the clothes she was wearing and her car as she was at work at the time. She got home in the early evening to find a smouldering ruin. Even now, she has an overnight bag in her car with the essentials packed in it!

If you need contents insurance get yourself some cashback at the same time, you really shouldn't need to pay more than £6 or £7 a month https://www.quidco.com/home-insurance/?ucb=0982d54d18a026163f76888c0d226166
