    There are also solicitors who would do a reasonably priced one hour “ fixed fee” interview to help you understand your obligations as an Executor. 
    I’m not sure that there is any point in that as there is nothing to execute apart from debts he has left behind. He owns nothing of any value apart from a car in him name

    Then just get a valuation on the car and show how the funeral expenses exceeded that. Set it out on a sheet of A4 that you can copy if needed.

    Write to his creditors to say it was an insolvent estate,

    As for your mum's debts, follow Sourcrates and tell them the accounts were  opened fraudulently and only came to light after your Dad's death. Ask for write-offs. 
  • It is worth checking to see if the debts are joint, or were simply accounts in his name with a second card taken out for your mum (actually for your Dad to spend on). 

    Most credit cards have lone account holders, so it is possible that a lot of it won't be in her name at all. I think you will need to go through all incoming emails and paperwork to discover the individual details. 


    Some days, it's just not worth chewing through the leather straps....
