I read the machine does a rinse first that washes away the tablet before it's needed in the cycle.

On my very basic washing machine, the mechanism for releasing the catch on the detergent compartment broke and the repair apparently needed a replacement controller/main board which cost more I was willing to pay. I started just lobbing the tablet in the bottom of the machine, and haven't noticed any issues.0
