Whats the purpose of telephone surveys?

I am not grumbling because they usually pay more. But just wonder what benefit it is to the company involved. When all it consists of are asking questions with answers from 1 to 10 or happy to unhappy! So exactly like an online survey. Before I did these I was expecting more in-depth questions requiring you to say more. But that's not the case!

You get a higher level of quality in the answers with phone surveys than online, with fewer junk answers. Respondent engagement is also higher.0
