How to value used/old furniture etc for VAT, Customs and Insurance when removing from EU to UK?

Selling holiday home in EU and want to take some old furniture etc back to UK. These goods are subject to 20% VAT and also Customs Duties. The removal companies seem to be dismissing this matter. They want only one valuation which will be for both insurance (i.e, full replacement value) AND VAT and Customs Duties. But VAT would surely be only actual perceived value of old furniture as in re- selling it  - i.e. less than insurance value? I actually think the remover does not deal with the VAT and Customs anyway because the bill goes straight from HMRC to the owner of the items and so removal companies are dismissive/don't know about the matter. So, if complying with removers instructions - one would either under value for insurance or over value for VAT and Duties (using only one valuation). Can any one give advice on the matter?
