Unknown savings income on HMRC tax calc letter

Hi everyone,

I'm helping my Dad with his tax matters, and on his tax calc letter there's two entries for savings:

An entry titled "Untaxed interest" has the correct figure for his bank account interest, and the tax paid is £0, which is what it should be as he's well under the interest allowance.

An entry titled "Savings income" has an income figure, and tax paid figure which is 20% of the income, so presumably the tax on this was taken out of the interest before it was paid to him. The problem is he doesn't know where this income is from, and looking through all his paperwork I've not come across anything that would account for it. How can we find out, can we ask HMRC what financial institution this is from?

Has he ever made a claim for a refund of tax deducted from the statutory interest paid alongside a PPI refund?

No.

I think he had the same "Savings income" in the 2019/20 tax year as well. He doesn't have a tax calc letter for that year, but the total tax figure that HMRC says he paid is more than the total tax on his pensions. The difference is exactly the same as the "Savings income" tax he paid in 2020/21 that I described in the original post.
