Oil or Gas ... again

  • I changed at the start of the year. I had a 25 year old boiler which I had been told when it was serviced that it would only last another year or two and that it was not working at max capacity so when I had the chance of a grant I took it.   I have an app to control the heat which is great.

I opted for a prepay meter and once the April price rise was announced I loaded enough on it to see me through several months and I’m hoping by the time it runs out prices will have reduced or at least stabilised.

I don’t regret changing to gas for a second, love the fact I have constant hot water. The heating system was flushed at the time of connection and the radiators heat up really fast and are much hotter than previously so I actually had to turn some off and put others on a lower setting.

If the radiators are much hotter, would it not pay to turn down the boiler thermostat? Should save money and minimise the chance of scalding by the domestic hot water.
  • The boiler is only at 52 which is lower than the engineer set it at. That is a good temperature for the water so wouldn’t want to set it any lower.

Used to take ages for my radiators to get hot and I honestly think it was because there was so much sludge in them and also that my oil boiler was prob working at half capacity.  Difference now is amazing, they are hot in no time

Gas will probably get cheaper again when Vladimir gets his nordstream pipeline under the Baltic, direct to the heart of Europe.
Now that was a seriously inaccurate prediction. More mystic Meg than Nostradamus.

Yes, but I will say this for qwert_yuiop:  he/she was right back then about how much we depended on Vladimir for the price of gas.

I hope to get a grant to change my oil-fired boiler in the near future.  I was leaning towards oil rather than gas for all sorts of reasons, but since the supply of gas seems to be so dependant on a very few suppliers, I will definitely be going for oil now.
  • I'm a bit sorry now I didn't top up the tank by 700 litres when it was £398 for 500 litres a few weeks ago, at least £100 more expensive now.
