Monthly Pay Confusion For Leaving Period

Hi guys,

In my current role I am paid in arrears by a month on the 26th.

On the 17th of November, I handed in my notice as stated in my contract to leave on December the 17th.

I have been advised in my resignation letter that I will be receive a BACS payment for all monies owed on the 24th December.

As I usually get paid for the previous month, is this likely to be a full month for November and the remaining days of December?

I am a bit confused.

Cheers in advance

Justin

Are you an employee? is 24th normal payday?

If you are paid monthly its normal that you are paid late in the month but the monies cover the whole of that month, ie some in arrears some in advance. Commissions, overtime etc may be more lagged.

If you are highly unusual and working almost 2 months in hand but if thats whats happening then I'd expect a Jan payment to pay for the time in December as normal.
  • Hi Sandtree.

The 26th is normal payday, but will brought forward due to Christmas.

I was thinking that I would you a full months for the full month worked through November on December and a Pro Rate payment for the hours worked in December as it is paid in arrears.

    I'm probably wrong though.

    Thanks for your reply.

Your contract should clear it up but assuming you are salaried then the norm would be payment on 26 November would cover 1 to 26 Nov in arrears and 27-30 Nov in advance. Therefore your 24 Dec pay will be the last pay and cover the partial month of December you worked plus any excess holiday etc.

Generally "month in arrears" means we pay you at the end of the month (or nearly the end) for the whole of that month.
A "month in hand" would mean that we pay you at the end of November for the work you did in October - it is very very unusual for monthly pay to be done in this way - it used to be more common for weekly paid jobs.
So I would say that on 24 December, you will be paid for 1-17 December but why not ask your payroll team/person to be sure?
  • Thank you both.
