New job and tax query

I recently started a job. I noticed the tax code is 990L and wondering if I'm on the wrong tax code. Annual salary is around £26,500 and getting taxed around £250 a month. Is this wrong?+

Far too little information to say.  990L means you have a personal tax allowance of about £9900 this year as opposed to the standard 1257L (£12570) which means HMRC are potentially recovering an underpayment of tax, possibly from a prior tax year.  The only way to know is to contact HMRC and ask them or look on your online tax account if you have registered for that
  • Did you have two jobs at the same time (even if just for a small period of time) and now just have one?

Or is this your first job in this tax year?

Is this your first payslip or has the tax code changed since starting new job?
Have you had a P45 from old job?  If so tax code on that ?
  • Maybe you had a company car or other Benefit in Kinds (BIK) before and now HMRC are trying to catch up?
Travel lover, family man and some other stuff..

According to this very site, yes, that's wrong code, see this link - https://www.moneysavingexpert.com/family/check-tax-code/#calculator

You can either login to your HMRC tax account online or phone them to ask what's going on.

From what the op has posted so far what element of it is wrong?

I have only been in full time work since September, had a part time job over the summer.  Before the summer I was on UC and done a few agency shifts.

No not had a company car. Was on UC from Summer 2020 until September 2021

So how many different employers have you had during the current tax year?

It still seems likely you may have had two jobs at the same time for tax purposes i.e. paid by two employers in the same tax period.

You can check your Personal Tax Account and post details of how the tax code is calculated?  It's probably correct but without the breakdown it's all guesswork.  There could be literally millions of reasons why someone's tax code could be 990L.
