Insulate or boarding

  • Thought I would just post the results of insulating. Numerous trips to B&Q and homebase for cheap insulation, offer only lasted about 10 days. Eventually crawled into confined loft spaces and discovered that what I thought was a second layer above the insulation between the joists was in fact the only layer. No wonder sons bedroom was so cold. In the least accessible areas, no insulation at all.

Covered entire loft to 150mm and difference is massive, bedrooms all feel noticeably warmer despite the fact that I have turned the thermostat down 2 degrees and boiler is working far less than before to maintain temp

Thanks to all who posted info and links and to anybody contemplating insulating and putting it off because it is a fairly foul job get the mask and overalls and get on with it.

Good to hear that it helped you situation. Thanks for the update.

It definitely does help to have insulation in loft from my own experience having owned two houses, the 1st one with insulation poorly laid by a contractor we got condensation on the ceiling close to outside wall, when we went up we found out they had out insulation right up to the walls where they butt up to the roof, problem sorted.

Second house little insulation last Winter, house is noticeable warmer than last years with insulation
  • You should be aiming for 270mm covering and cross lay the insulation as well!

    Chipboard - R value is around 0.12 (m2 K/W)

    Rockwool is about 2.7
