Apprentice repaying apprenticeship costs?

Hello,

Can a public sector employer make an apprentice pay back the costs associated with the apprenticeship if the apprentice drops out?

looking at the apprenticeship levy rules, I think there is a clause that says employers cannot ask the apprentice to pay back the fees.

Is there anything the employer can do that is legal that makes the apprentice repay apprenticeship costs if they drop out? Or is it tough luck and re-look at the apprenticeship selection procedure.

I would suggest that you contact the National Apprenticeship Helpdesk on this number Contact the National Apprenticeship Helpdesk (education.gov.uk) to check the situation if you leave the employer before the apprenticeship ends.
The comments I post are my personal opinion. While I try to check everything is correct before posting, I can and do make mistakes, so always try to check official information sources before relying on my posts.
  • It's against the funding rules for the employer to seek the funds from the apprentice.

As it's a public sector employer, they may have funded the apprenticeship themselves

If you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales

That wouldn't be very sensible of them as public sector employers still have to pay the levy, and the cost of the levy is reduced when you take on apprentices. Normally they would only do this in the rare circumstances where they cannot arrange the appropriate apprenticeship through a scheme.

It might be helpful though if the OP gave better information about what they are trying to claim back. Because some things are included in the formal costs, and there may be things that they can claim back.
