Looking for basic/cheap laptop

...for my husband to take with him on deployment. I don't want an expensive one in case it gets damaged in the land of sand.
Any deals out there?
Just want one to play cd's, dvd's and connect to the internet(if they have it out there).
Or - any opinions on the tesco desktops that run linux. An alternative option is to get one of these for me at home - would it connect to the internet, run a word processor and play dvd's.

Thanks

  • hi i was after a laptop a while ago and didnt want to pay much as i only wanted it for the internet and listening to music and dvds etc, i went to currys as they said they had one for £249, but was sold out so i went to tescos, and got one for £299 its a gateway laptop the only prob you get with cheap laptops is that if you store to much on there they are slow at loading up, i have not had a problem with mine i watch dvds got loads of music on there and play games the internet is good aswel im running it off my dads through a wireless router. i would shop around and see what you can get hope this helps.
  • Go to Makro (google it) they have acer laptops that are brilliant for £200, but if you want something really simple, they have decent ones for £100
