Post covid working from home

Forgive me if I've posted this in the wrong place. I'm considering moving to permanent home working, after "forced" WfH through the pandemic. I hear so many saying "oooh there's tax implications for doing it permanently" but no one can point me in the right direction or tell me what these are. I'm struggling to find anything online that's not linked to covid regulations. So my question is are there tax implications, or other things, that I need to be aware of so that I can make an informed decision?

Many thanks in advance for any pointers on where to look!

Hi, that sounds good to me, is your employer up for it?

If so, there is a lot of good info on the Acas site, such as that in this link - https://www.acas.org.uk/working-from-home

You can also phone Acas and ask them specific questions. If they don't know, it's usually not worth knowing.

I'd also assume that you'd have a chat with your employer and the HR department and draw up some kind of agreement before you begin on a permanent basis. You'll probably want to discuss everything thoroughly with your employer before making any decisions.

[Unless you're talking about working for yourself from home, which is a whole different kettle of fish?  But there again, Acas is a good place to start.]
Please note - taken from the Forum Rules and amended for my own personal use (with thanks) : It is up to you to investigate, check, double-check and check yet again before you make any decisions or take any action based on any information you glean from any of my posts. • Thank you @MalMonroe, this is really useful. I'm very fortunate in that all staff are being asked (and accommodated) for requests to work in the office, from home or take a hybrid approach.

I might just get in touch with Acas

So you are not self-employed, just being asked to work from home by your employer?  If so the only things you really need to consider are:

    - you can claim £6 tax relief per week, numerous threads on the subject. No idea if this will be a "thing" for 2022/23 though.
    - obviously you will have to think about increased heating costs, but potentially offset by lower commuting/petrol/parking costs

There are no "tax implications", rather the tiny tax benefit as mentioned above.
  • Thanks @emmajones1976. That's very useful to know. Much appreciated!
