It's legit.Or it might be a scam. More info required - for starters, who's the letter from? There is a compensation "thing" ongoing for mis-sold loans : https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-58089605But just make sure you know who you're dealing with if you feel you have a legitimate claim - there are always cowboys jumping on the compo bandwagon in cases such as this.

Provident have set up a Scheme of Arrangement, see https://debtcamel.co.uk/provident-scheme-claim-refund/. If your letter sounds like it is referring to that Scheme then it is legit.
If the letter is from a claims company offering to help you make a claim to the Scheme that's not illegal but it's a very bad idea! Just make the claim yourself.
If the letter doesn't refer to the Scheme then it's very likely a scam as from what I understand when there is a Scheme of Arrangement that is the only way to make a claim.0
