Price matching - what are you entitled to?

Here's what I want to do. I want to buy a new TV but I've seen it cheaper on the net than in store. If I ask them to price match are there any things I need to do? For example take a printout of the web offer to show? Does it have to be a certain website etc?

Any help with regards price matching in a situation like this please. Thanks.

There are no real rules on price matching. Its up to the retailer whether they do a price match policy and what their terms and conditions relating to it are.

I tried like you to get Currys and Comet to price match a TV I had found for £150 cheaper on the net so I could take it away that day instead of waiting for delivery. Both retailers said they will not price match items from the internet and I think Currys said they only price match items that are in a store 10 miles from their store.
I took a print out of the webpage showing the price of the item.

Pretty much meaning "we wont match any prices!"
I ended up just buying it cheaper on the net.

Definitely retailer specific. It is rather unusual for retailers to accept internet prices as often their T & Cs say must be within 15miles of store or something so often excludes the net. HOwever, there are exceptions so check the retailers policy. Have you tried going to a local independant retailer with a print of the net price- they may have more room to negotiate than big elec stores and you would be supporting local business...
  • We found a tv we liked online but in store it was £500 dearer. Curry's agreed to price match it as it was their website that was doing the offer. After a bit of bargaining we got 25% off a stand and some free scart leads aswell. Result. I think they would only price match if it were cheaper on their website.
  • shops generally dont price match internet prices, overheads etc, guarantees, actually speaking to person, guaranteeing getting the product, the list goes on.

I went to a local small trader with the requirements for a specific dishwasher. the net price was £379, the store price was £460 (same as Curry's). Although they couldn't price match, We did get it for £420 delivered and installed.
