Windows 10 can't initialize new SSD?

I just got a WD Blue SN550 1TB NVMe, put it in an external case and tried to format it.

First of all Disc Management gave me two options to initialize, both failed with 'Incorrect Function' error.
It was showing as offline, but clicking that to switch to online also gave 'Incorrect Function' error.

I've tried it a 2 other usb ports and now all I have is offline (initialize is grayed out) and again all I get is 'Incorrect Function' error when I try to bring it online.

Properties says it's working!  So I don't know what to do at this point?

Can anyone suggest what to do now???

Thanks.

The case is something that Amazon bundled with the ssd, brand name iGUJU?

I've tried 2; usb 3 ports and the usb c port, same error message when trying to bring it online from all of them!

Are you able to open the PC and attach the HDD internally (assuming you have a desktop not a laptop!)

This would allow you to see if there is a hardware error with the disk

Laptop only (Dell G7). It has 2 ssd slots, but the idea was to transfer everything off the second ssd on to this one.
Looks like I'll have to try putting the new drive into the laptop tomorrow and then see if it'll  initialize there.

Can you give us a link to the case/caddy you got from Amazon?

Also can you show us a screenshot of the disk management screen please?

That may be fun...    Solved: Re: G7 7700 - Installing second m.2 SSD drive in slot 2 - Dell Community

Are your trying to clone the disk so you can use the new one instead? If that's the case I'd recommend not doing that but do a clean install of W10 onto the new SSD, then at a later date copy whatever data you need from the old SSD.

The second drive is just storage. The current ssd is 500gig the new one is 1tb.  I was planning on just copying everything off the current drive (just drag and drop) on to the new one then swapping them over.
