Can I claim back the tax.....

Can I claim back the tax on a £6000 lump sum I added to my pension this year?
I still have 7 years to go and just wanted to increase it a little. If I can, where and how do I do it. Many thanks.

    More information needed.
Why do you think that you are owed tax back ?
  • And what method did you use to contribute?

Net pay and relief at source are the usual options although a few make lump sum payments with no tax relief at point of payment.  These tend to be defined benefit schemes like teachers pensions or civil service.

Was this a lump sum contribution to buy extra pension in (for example) the CS Pension Scheme/LGPS/TPS etc?

If you choose to make payment directly to your pension fund, you will need to arrange tax relief directly with HMRC as the contributions are not being deducted from your pay. You can do this via your self assessment tax return or by calling or writing to HMRC.

... an old post but the topic has come up more recently (maybe a year or so back) - posters have had difficulty in getting HMRC to understand the position.

It seems that you need to refer to claiming "concessional relief"

    See https://www.gov.uk/hmrc-internal-manuals/paye-manual/paye130025

under Example: Relief due on gross superannuation payments

For 2008 to 2009 individual has made a £1,000 gross lump sum payment to a superannuation scheme and relief has not been given through the net pay arrangement and you have established that tax relief is due using the Pension Tax Manual (see Pension Tax Manual (PTM) at PTM044240). Generally in these cases tax relief is given through the Self Assessment system.

  • It's the Civil Service Alpha scheme, I get tax relief on my monthly extra contributions and the scheme advised me I could claim for the lump sum. As the lump sum was from earned income I had already paid tax on it and didn't want to pay tax on it when I get it back in the form of a pension in years to come.

    You seem a bit confused.

The pension from Alpha will be taxable income, there is nothing you can do to prevent this.

Your normal contributions will get the maximum possible tax relief via your payslip.
Same for any extra contributions paid via payroll.

If you paid a qualifying lump sum contribution outside of this then it is upto you to claim any tax relief due from HMRC.  The amount of tax relief on a £6,000 contribution could be £0.  Could be over £3k.  It all depends what taxable income (and type of income) you have in the tax year you made the lump sum contribution in.

This is the more recent discussion (around a year ago).

Jan eventually succeeded in getting a refund.

    Dear All,
I want to share the good news with you that yesterday I finally managed to speak with a senior tax officer who took the reference numbers you shared to locate the information on Concessional Relief in their handbook. She called me back few hours later to confirm that I can get back the tax I paid last year. I am very happy about  this outcome and want to thank you as I could never ever get back the tax relief for the additional pension contribution I made, without your advice.
