Unexpected Barclaycard letter

This is just a post to vent a little in a safe environment.

I had a flashback/wobble yesterday when the postie dropped off the post, one envelope had Barclaycard on the front. They were one of my more difficult creditors and apart from some letters regarding refunds a few years back I've not had any contact with them, I don't even get invitations to apply for a card from them.
This letter was for a refund because "Following a recent review of our operating procedures, we've identified that some of our customers were charged interest incorrectly while they were on an agreed Repayment Plan".
Turns out I'm one of those customers and I've got a cheque for £31.07 (basic refund  £18.90 + compensatory interest £15.21 - income tax on interest £3.04).

I'm happy to get money back from them, but I do have to question why this has happened 10 years to the very month that I became debt free.

Thank you for reading.
Proud to have dealt with my debts, became debt free on 03/11/2011. Repaid £54,723.41 LBM May 2006.

  • Not sure about the timing, but I think the regulators may be clamping down on them or something. For the last year I've had Lowells or Cabot or something sending me a letter every week or more to tell me they owe me £4 for something similar (egg card dispute). I was gonna just let them stew as it costs them more to send the letters, but they then escalated to leaving me a voicemail a day so I called up and said they can send me a cheque.

I wouldn't read too much into it - I think they are all just trying to get their house in order.

Several years into my DMP I was advised that two Barclaycard related debts had been reviewed and for similar reasons you have stated, they had assessed the accounts and determined I was due a refund of several hundred pounds.  The only difference was that the debts were still live and being managed by a DCA and they effectively 'set off' the refund against the outstanding balance.  This effectively reduced the amounts owing to just a little over a hundred on each and I persuaded the DCA to write those balances off - so a win at the end of the day.

Occasionally companies do audits of there internal procedures, to make sure they are in line with current guidelines etc etc.

Some times failings are found, and dependant on what those failing are, and how they affected you, they are required to compensate you for any loss, or any disadvantage you suffered due to the companies actions.

Sometimes these issues can have occurred many years previously, so its just good old fashioned coincidence, that`s all.

  • I had a barclaycard debt that was sold to a debt collection agency, which is currently unenforceable (£4200)   bcard wrote to me saying they were deducting £800 off of it, but sadly they didnt send it to me, they must have given it to the agency. Not sure how that works but instead of a debt of £4200 that im never going to pay, i have a debt od £3400 im never going to pay. Im wondering if the agency will try and say that a payment was made so resets the statute barred clock?
