Poll started 9 November 2021

When it comes to grocery shopping you've a lot of choice – from the aisles of Aldi to the wonders of Waitrose. Yet your choice could be costing (or saving) you hundreds. So tell us, which supermarket is your favourite?

    Bugens is currently leading?
    Really?

I'd like to see some sort of definition of "supermarket" here.

Is it asking for favourite supermarket or the one you usually shop at? The question is the former but the answers give the latter. In my case the answers are different as I generally shop at my local supermarket despite preferring another one
  • Depends what I'm buying. I love Aldi for most things because of the price and quality. But there are a lot of things they don't sell.

I am surprised at the gap between Tesco and Asda.

To be honest, most people probably shop at the supermarket closest to their home. Personally, I do the majority of my shopping at Asda because it is a 10 minute walk from my house. However, given the choice, I would much prefer to shop at Waitrose.

Different people will have favourite supermarkets for different reasons. I like the variety of food you get in Waitrose and you can really find some interesting curry sauces etc in there and I accept I have to pay a premium for that. On the other hand. I don't like Aldi and Lidl because I think the food isn't that interesting (these supermarkets deliberately have fewer items in their stores to help keep prices low). However, I appreciate some people may like Aldi and Lidl due to their lower prices.

We live in a small market town where there are 2 supermarkets, Waitrose and Sainsbury’s.
The nearest other supermarkets are 15-20 miles return and there is often a lot of traffic.

The poll didn’t take things like that into account.

  • Absolutely agree - with comment re favourite or one most shop at?

Most importantly depending upon where you live you may only have access to certain supermarkets - so it doesn't feel a level playing field - realise it's not scientific research and just indicative!
However looks like the number of stores doesn't directly correlate with votes? (Tesco operates 4,008 stores, Aldi 11,205, Sainsburys 1,411, Morrisons 497). Enjoy them all! (except Tesco for me, and no Booths in SE but lovely stores when visited)

I long to give Lidl/Aldi a real shot as I appreciate it has a large crowd singing its praises, but I mainly buy fruit/salad and I always find that the fruit on their shelves is mouldy... multiple occassions I look and the same issue, it would freak me out to buy a pack of apples if I've seen that one of the other packs in the crate has developed mould.
