Gold Crowns on the NHS

Hi all,
I have been told by my dentist that I need a crown on my premolar. Seeing that I have severe bruxism she has advised that a gold crown would be best for me.
She has only quoted me private prices (650-685!!).
Does the NHS still provide gold crowns?
Would there be a difference in quality between a NHS gold crown and a private one?
Apart from the aesthetics, is there a difference in quality/functionality between a gold crown and a metal (silver colour) one?

Thanks in advance for replying.

No, haven't done for many years.my hubby couldn't even get an ordinary crown
On a front tooth through nhs
Two crowns were way over budget so ended up with a plate.
He really only needed one crown but the damned dentist knock the other one out being handed during a fitting
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.
  • You will be offered a non precious metal crown on the NHS as gold crowns have not been available on the NHS for a long time.
A non precious metal crown will do just the same job .
  • I suffer from some mild bruxism and i have a silver crown which i think is platinum, it has lasted 18 years so far, it was installed by an NHS dentist and until recently i had no idea it was precious metal because i'm not sure why a normal one was not used instead.
  • It will not be platinum , it will be a mixture of metals , probably including platinum , which look silver and on the NHS 18 years ago would have been non precious metal alloy.
