At https://www.gov.uk/government/collections/tax-structure-and-parameters-statistics there are links to two ODS documents detailing current and historical tax bands and rates. The rates file shows something that is really puzzling me: for tax years 2017/18 to 2021/22 the basic rate seems to go up by 1% every year. Now it's easy to find other HMRC documentation where the basic rate for those years is the good old 20%. What am I missing?

I have uploaded an image that shows the table (some elements are hidden). Note 11 is just this: "(11) The basic rate of tax on net dividends is 7.5%."

As I said... v puzzled.

Basic rate income tax is still 20% - there's an error in those tables.

    What does Note 11 say?

As in my OP: "(11) The basic rate of tax on net dividends is 7.5%."

So nothing to do with the 20% basic rate!?

You mean... I can't trust an official release direct from the horse's mouth

It's not that I doubt the 20% -- I have done my tax returns in the last years with the firm understanding that it's 20% Period. But nevertheless, I find this sort of thing pretty unsettling.

Note 11 is correct. The basic rate of income tax on dividend income is 7.5%. But yes, the table itself is wrong when it shows the basic rate rising by 1% a year.

My experience of what comes from a horse's mouth is neighs, whinnies and burps. This is about as useful.

    :smirk: Right.

And yes, errors do happen but this is pretty stark, I'd think.

Well, never mind, riddle not solved but at least I am sure that I didn't overlook something important (not unheard of).

I suspect that whoever did it typed "20 (note 11)" and then used the plus arrow in the corner to copy it down the next few rows, not realising that it would automatically add 1 to the 20 for each line copied.
