You should be able to access your own council tax account online, just register with your council online. Then you can see exactly what you're being charged and what you're paying. And also get the correct phone number to call the council because you don't trust the email (which, given the number of scams going around, is perfectly reasonable). Just phone and ask if they sent the email, if so why and what they need the information for. Or send a secure message online once you can access your council tax account.Very sound comment thank you.Just out of interest, I have visited my online council tax account since your post and noted that it does not have any facility whatsoever for secure messages. Similarly it does not contain any contact details whatsoever for the Council tax department.I will probably now attempt to make contact by telephone using the main number from the Local Authority website to check out the authenticity of the enquiry and perhaps at the same time enquire why there is no secure form of communication available.0 -

The council just want to check that there had been no change in ownership, I'm sure you would be the first to complain, if the held you liable for something you weren't liable for.The information is also used to update the electoral register. If anyone over the age of 18 isn't on the register, they can not vote.Don't forget, credit providers use the electoral register before lending (as do mobile phone companies).
