This week's MoneySaver who wants advice asks...

We run a lottery at work, and the prize money has rolled over to £400. The numbers that came out of the last draw were for a colleague who has been off sick with stress and hasn't kept up to date with her entry payments. We don't know how much longer she's likely to be off work or even if she'll return. We're split as to whether she wins the money or we roll it over again.

Unfortunately the MSE team can't answer Money Moral Dilemma questions as contributions are emailed in or suggested in person. They are intended to be a point of debate and discussed at face value. Remember that behind each dilemma there is a real person so, as the forum rules say, please keep it kind and keep it clean.

  • I say give her the money. In my experience good things come to those who do the right thing 🥰
  • As they say "you've got to be in it to win it". If you don't pay then you are not in it.

What do the rules of the office lottery say for a situation where somebody is off sick and hasn't paid?  That is the only way to provide an answer to the question..
  • That is an excellent answer.
Of course, by AGREEMENT, the rules could be altered.
  • Amended would be a more appropriate word.
  • Did you plan to ask her to bring her account up to date when she came back to work? If so, then yes you certainly should give her the winnings when she comes back, minus why she owes! That and it’s the decent thing to do!
