Money Moral Dilemma: Should we roll over absent co-worker's lottery win?

  • Ask yourself this. If your colleague returned to work having not won. Would she be paying the money that she has missed? Of course not, roll over the money. Set a precedent and you will always need to do the same for everyone else. Why should they bother paying if absent?
  • I can’t believe this is even a question. If someone is so ill they can’t work -especially if it is work-related - then there is no question that morally she should be sent the money, together with a ‘Congratulations’ card, signed by all with their best wishes for a speedy recovery and return to work.
  • If this colleague is suffering from stress the kindest thing to do would be to give her the winnings & just take out the monies owed.
I would imagine, at the moment, she will appreciate all the kindness she can get.
  • What would your response be if your syndicate won the jackpot? Would you be having a different conversation. In that extreme circumstance would your colleague have a case to take you to court for their share of a prize? Judge Rinder/Judge Judy would only ask you for the contract that states there’s no payment if you don’t pay. Therefore it would be wise to pay them and deduct the monies owed. As most have commented, have the conversation, and update your contract. There might be a template somewhere to help you to draft one. All the best
  • Going forward get an syndicate agreement from the lottery website. It will cover this senario and everyone signs it

Seems to me, if she’s won it, the syndicate included them in the draw.   The obvious thing is not to include those who haven’t paid, in the draw.  If she’s won, it’s because of the syndicates choice to include them and the lottery management needs to live up to that.  However, she owes the dues for all the draws she’s been in, so deduct from winnings.
  • I agree with all who said take the missing  out of the winnings and pass it on. It's the right thing to do. I would say she hasn't missed the payments on purpose.

Definitely.  My husband was in an office lottery and as he rarely carried cash, he set up a monthly SO to the organisers bank (dedicated sub) account so the subs were always paid.
  • do as you would be done by as we were taught as children
the fact that she had not been removed from the draw means she is in it until removed
so easy to take outstanding contributions from winnings and send the rest with best wishes to her and a nice card!?
if she can be contacted you could ask if she wants next payments to be paid from winnings as well to stay in draw for the near future
if no one knows how to contact her and you have a decent HR team they should act as an intermediary for you
    Hope she feels better soon
