Dishwasher-tarnished metal tray

I have finally switched on to the delights of my dishwasher, which came into its own when cleaning all my kitchenware once the new one was built. Consequently most things have gone in there, and I'm particularly pleased with how sparkly anything stainless steel emerges.

I bought a metal cup tray from the chazzer the other day, so I duly stuck it in the DW. Mistake, it came out looking dark and tarnished, almost as if its been oxidised and anodised. Vinegar hasn't worked on it, neither has cream cleaner (Ajax in a previous life). On reflection the DW was a mistake, when a bit of squeezy and and a warm rinse would have done! Its functional but dull-looking, how can I restore this item it to its past glory? It has an Ikea label on it but I can't actually find it online so don't know what its actually made of but am assuming it is aluminium.

You can't. Once it's been salted, that removes th layer of shine. It won't come back.

  • Thanks @-taff . My outlay on the tray was all of £1, so unless I need BKF for other reasons I won't be rushing to purchase it.

  • Thanks for the info @-taff   never heard of it before so doing some reading and it appears it helps with all sorts of things - we have some scratches in toilet bowl (the one-time DH decided to clean the toilet he used a metal brush instead of usual toilet brush - and it left grey scratches) and it appears it can remove them so (someone who reviewed it had exactly this problem and says it removed them.   As it's a fairly new toilet I was unhappy at the thought of replacing it so definitely worth the cost of this to see if it works as, it really makes me feel toilet is dirty with the scratches even though I know it's clean.

  • do you have any headlight cleaner? I had to buy some for my car after the last MOT advisory as they were cloudy. Me being me I was intrigued as to what else I can use it for, so tried it on my stainless steel kettle and it worked a treat, as it's also used for chrome cleaning....

I'm not convinced this will work, but will try with toothpaste (supposed to be the business on headlights).

  • Aluminium will always dull in a dishwasher, esp if it has been lacquered

I think once that lacquer has been removed, you aren't getting the shine back
