When you look at the mess made by a gas explosion in Ayr last week, just think how big it would have been if it was hydrogen rather than natural gas  (think of the Hindenburg) - just saying
Never under estimate the power of stupid people in large numbers
  • There is that but it's probably more to do with the fact that hydrogen is a very leaky gas.  So yes, you will get some explosions where it leaks and builds-up, but mostly it will just leak away and vanish.

Is hydrogen any more explosive than methane? I thought it was the proportions of the gas/air mixture that was critical. Flour is extremely explosive in the right proportion with air.

The Hindenburg held a lot more hydrogen than a normal house supply could deliver quickly.

By volume, hydrogen is less energy-dense than the other fuel gases: 10,050 kJ per cubic metre compared with methane  32,560.  Hydrogen is a lot more easily ignited though, so static sparks become more of a potential hazard (again, see Hindenburg)

ETA, yes you are right about H2 being move explosive, apparently

on an equal mass basis, hydrogen gas explosions are more destructive and carry further. However, the duration of a conflagration tends to be inversely proportional to the combustive energy, so that hydrogen fires subside much more quickly than hydrocarbon fires.
