Whilst I applaud these guys going out and getting work I wonder how it works regarding paying tax and NI contributions, are there checks in place?

Are you suggesting "these guys" might be dishonest? I wonder why you are wondering...
  • My husband does this alongside his main job. He has registered for self assessment to pay his tax etc for these earnings.

He said that most of the people he speaks to do this. They are paid via the app and it's all recorded so in theory the company can share this with HMRC.
You also have to share your passport, a DBS check etc to work for them and they require evidence that you are eligible to work in the UK.

As will all walks of life there will always be people who try and avoid paying tax.
