A 12 volt battery should generally read more than 12v.
According to Hayne's rule of thumb
10.5 = battery fully discharged
12.3 = 50% charged
12.48 = 75% charged
12.66+ = fully charged0 -
i would say something is draining the battery after it has been parked for a while,when you get the car started and let it run for a while or drive it for a bit to charge the battery and then switch it off and try to start it again instantly will it start then?
or do you have a bad earth lead?
try putting a jump lead from the negative battery post (MAKE SURE IT IS DEFINATLY THE NEGATIVE AND NOT THE POSITIVE!!!!) on to a good bare metal part of the car,maybe a strut top or something,just somewhere that will earth out,then try to start it,this will rule out a faulty earth strap (i have seen this a few times especially on volvos)
also check the battery terminals are tight,they make have come loose from when tha battery was changed or not properly tightened and this is it loosened off....work permit granted!0 -
Check the battery connections are clean and tight. One of the cables from the battery will be connected to the bodywork - make sure this connection is clean and secure. Check that all earth straps are in place and securely connected. Ensure that the cable connections at the starter are also clean and firm.
The starter moter takes a large current when trying to start a car engine, so it is very important that it is easy for all those amps the get to it.0 -

Hi guys n girls, Done a browse to see if i could find a source to my problem. Which seems identical to the thread writers.
Bought a battery after mines kept dying. The that too kept going dead however the garage replaced it and now 2 months on its started hapening again. The cars taking its time to start - having a little chug to begin with.
However i noticed someone mentioned a dim light. An one of my headlights is going so have been using with my bottom fogs for a while - wondering if this could be the reason or maybe i too need a new alternator???
How much do these things cost???

i know the problems solved... but just two more points to maybe help others...first... battery terminals.. had a similar problem, and it was down to the clamp on the earth strap having a crack through it.... also a friend of mine had starting problems.... which were due to not having an alternator drive belt.... seriously....0
