Ex-partner stopped paying joint loan

Options
My ex-partner and I had agreed he would pay his half of the loan payment into my account each monthly until the loan balance was paid off.  He has stopped these payments and I can't get in touch with him any more.  The bank have said there is basically nothing they can do.  What do I do?

  • You can either pay the full amount to maintain a clean credit file or let the bank chase one or both of you for the arrears.

Joint loans are not 50/50 but you are each independently responsible for its payment in full. If you have lost contact there is only two choices as outlined by zx81 though whilst the bank will attempt to chase both of you at the end of they day they already know where you live and may struggle to trace your ex

There's no 'half loan'. As others have said, you are jointly and severally liable for the entire loan.
The lender will come after whoever they can most easily pursue if you make late payments or default.

  • Was this actually a Joint loan?  Or did you take the loan in your name And he agreed to contribute to half the monthly cost?
If this is the case then there is absolutely nothing you can do, unless you have it in writing that he agreed to this and want to take him to the small claims court.
In the mean time you will have to carry on paying the full amount so you don't default and adversely impact your rating.
If it is indeed a joint loan then like the above posters said ideally you need to keep paying or it will impact your rating.
