Tesco liquor security

Stopped at the local Tesco on the way home from work to buy a bottle of tipple for MiL (honestly!)

There was a beep when I exited but I didn't think anything of it.  But when I arrived home I realised it's because the security seal hadn't been taken off the bottle!!

Now this isn't a first world problem and I could return to the shop in the next couple of days to get them to sort it but that causes some issues.  First is - I declined the receipt so have no easily available proof of purchase.  Secondly how does one go into a shop with something that looks like it hasn't actually been purchased without being wrestled to the ground by some nubile security individual??

My first thought was a pop the security contraption off the bottle but I didn't know what chaos that might cause.  I know clothing shops used to have devices that would splurt ink thus staining the "stolen" clothing as well as your hands.

Any ideas if removing the security thingme is even possible??

(sorry for location of this post - I couldn't think of anywhere suitable and know that there are grocery and food threads lurking locally.)

Don't try to remove it yourself.

Take it back in-store, in a Tesco bag, go straight to a till and explain. Hopefully you paid by card and can at least show them the transaction you made in store, even if it included other items.
  • No idea about removing the tag but how about calling Tesco's so they can pull the tapes for the tills around the time you were there so when you go in they can see you paid for it then they can just take tag off.

You're both right of course that would be the sensible option.

And the regular security guard isn't really all that nubile so I could probably outrun him if I had to.

I've had the same thing happen with clothes from Tesco although there was no beep when I went out so didn't even know until I got home and unpacked the shopping!  I did however beep on the way back in to get it removed and I just explained to the security guy what had happened and went to the customer service desk to get it sorted out.

It happened to me with a designer label expensive jumper I’d bought once. I took it into work where the helpful scientists in the lab froze the tag with some dry ice and smashed it off with no ink stain at all!
  • I would probably call the store first and explain what's happened, and agree with them what time I should bring it in and who to speak to. I'm not sure if they'd be able to check your transaction from your Clubcard (if you have one), but that might be worth asking.
