Ill Health Retirement - timing

After years of ill health and trying to remain in work, I have realised that doing so is increasingly detrimental to my physical and mental health. I feel I can no longer continue. I’ve used all my sick leave and am now on nil pay.
I work in the Public Sector and therefore subject to the McCloud remedy. Bearing in mind the remedy period is only until 31st March 2022, would it be beneficial for me to apply for Ill Health Retirement now? Would I be worse off financially if I delayed until after the remedy cut-off date? Or should I wait to be dismissed on capability grounds? I don’t have full NIC’s so the only advantage I can see of remaining in work is I continue to receive them. Or is this incorrect?
My GP is supportive of an IHR application and so far my employer hasn’t raised the subject of capability although I don’t think it will be long before this happens given my very poor sick record in recent years.
Any advice gratefully received. Thanks.
