Completed survey. Good to see that it is being recognised that debt and mental health can impact on each other.
Reality check - hit rock bottom on 15 Dec 2008 with unsecured debts of £29,136 and not enough money to live on

    :j NOW DEBT FREE!!!! :j
:oI try to take life one day at a time but sometimes several days attack me at once :o
  • Many thanks Mupeteer - if you're interested, you can read more about this at www.mhdebt.info

  • Dunno how I missed this before, but I've done it now. Very interesting, especially the bit about informing creditors you have mental health problems. Does that help?

  • Thanks also Spendaholic chick - the aim is to present a picture of how the experience of mental health problems interacts with financial difficulty/debt. Given that one-in-six of the adult British problem have a mental health problem (according to government surveys), it could be posited that one-in-six customers/clients of banks/building societies will also be likely to have a MHP. However, little attention has been given to this to date....

    Best wishes

survey done. It actually helped me realise that my debt is getting to me and once the new year is over i'm off to the doc's. I have known for ages im feeling depressed but never wanted to face up to it before. That's about to change.

Thank you, chrisfitch, for doing this survey. Duly filled in, but can I point out an error?

    Question 19 says:

Q19 In your opinion, have your debt or financial difficulties made your mental health problems worse?

If you tick "Yes" you are then taken to question 20 which says:

Q20 How have your mental health problems made your debt or financial difficulties worse? Please write in the box below

These are opposite questions: 19 asks if debt has made mental health worse, 20 asks for details on how mental health has made debt worse.

I have answered question 20 as if it is asking for details of how debt has made mental health worse, as I assume it is related to the previous Q19.

Can you please confirm that this is an error and that people should fill it in as I have done? (As it stands, the details asked for in Q20 has already been asked in a previous question in the survey).

Nevertheless, a very worthwhile survey. Thank you.
