Who do I need to contact.

Will keep it short, Went BR and now discharged. Have gone to changed my Broadband to BT they’ve called back to say I failed credit check because an old debt from 2017 is showing as active on my file? Is it down to them to update or the credit file company?thanks

    Hey bcfc1710!

From my experience you need to write to each creditor that still shows on your credit file, asking them to close the account on your credit files.  Pull your report using MSE Credit Club and Clearscore.

I used the following template and did it by email/post:

    ---------

    Attn of: <name>  & reference

I went bankrupt on dd/mm/yyyy.  I attach a copy of my Bankruptcy Order and discharge letter.

I am writing to ask you to correct my credit file for the above debt. At the moment, the default is showing updated as dd/mm/yyyy

This is incorrect and a breach of the SCOR/ICO 2016 guidelines and the Data Protection Act 1998.

There should be a default date not later than the start date of my bankruptcy, the account should be closed, balance updated and it should be reported on all credit reference agencies (that you reported to before) correctly.

Please correct this entry within 28 days or supply me with a written reason why you will not do so.

Look forward to hearing from you.

    ---------

For me this resulted in the account either closed / partially satisfied with a zero balance.  It takes about 8-12 weeks for the companies to make these changes.

Regarding using a company you previously owed, I have avoided doing this.
